We did a book tasting today where students previewed different books. Books selected varied from brand new to those with low circulation. The students loved it and found some new books to enjoy.

This week I'm playing with a new platform. Check out my journal entry here.
Ok, I'm present and accounted for but I don't have any books to tell the world about. We haven't been reading this week in the Media Center. It's been an Hour Of Code marathon of sorts. This week we threw caution to the wind and along with it our weekly schedule. The Media Center became a dedicated space the Hour of Code. Nearly every classroom in the school will be participating. We've had parents coding, teachers coding and non coders falling in love with programming. It's been a crazy busy yet exciting week. I do look forward things slowing down a bit. Aww, who am I kidding our Media Center is like Forest Gump's box of chocolates....you never know what you're going to get! Hello World, I'm back in the blogging business! In a perfect world, I'd update you on the happenings of the HSES Media Center multiple times per week but rather than make promises I can't keep I present to you (at the very least) What We're Reading Wednesdays. Each week, I'll let you know what we're reading in the Media Center. If you really want to be in-the-know follow me on Twitter @gogauthia. or hollyspringsmediacenter on Instagram. I now present to you our first What We're Reading..... Several of our kindergarten and first grade classes are participating in the Media Center’s Hour of Code Codefest next week so we needed to lay the foundation and learn some key vocabulary words so we read Eric Carle’s The Secret Birthday Message. We talked about codes and secret languages. Then we learned that computers have their own language and we were going to practice speaking that language next week. Kindergarten classes that aren’t participated shared stories about going global. Our schoolwide theme this year is going global. From our school fundraiser to Mystery Skypes to world class traveling Flat Stanleys we’ve tried to infuse global learning into everything we’ve done this year. In addition to What Does it Mean to go Global? The students also enjoyed This is the Way we Eat Our Lunch. Second grade classes are always working on the ever popular story elements. So we were excited to break out our brand spanking new Jon Agee book It’s Only Stanley. It was an adorable story with rhyme, great illustrations and a surprise ending. So there you have it that’s what we’re reading. Stay tuned for more! Second graders just finished a week of amazing celebrations! Students used Pebble Go to research different American holidays. They learned how and why different holidays are celebrated. Then they created their own unique holiday. Students created a persuasive Power Point to prove that their holiday was the best. After presenting their Power Points to the class students voted on the winning holiday. Those with the winning ideas help the class plan a holiday celebration. The sweet students in Mrs. Zimmerman's class chose to Check out our fun holiday celebrations!
